Jewish Historical Museum’s exposition called ‘Gedurfd verzamelen’ (Bold Collection), where this title refers to special purchases of art by Jewish collectors from the end of the 19th century.
As visionaries they behaved contrarily at that time. Purchases were seen as a joke by many others. Particularly the paintings of Chagall were viewed with incomprehension.
Sal Slijper (collector) was seen as the patron of Piet Mondriaan. They became friends and Slijper bought a lot of his works. All the purchased work ended up very well in the Gemeente Museum*) in The Hague.
Here are some works of Chagall, Mondriaan, Sluijters, Breitner, Isaac Israels, van de Velde en Leo Gestel.
